Happy Superbowl Sunday Synners! Time that I celebrate that it is one step closer to baseball season! Woohoo!! Okay Kate, back to music…
Last Monday I took on a campaign for The Kills marketing what was a very different marketing technique used in past SynnerNation campaigns. Before taking on this show, I was not too familiar with The Kills or their music, but I always love taking on shows with artist I am not familiar with, because what other great way to learn about different styles of music. The Kills main marketing tool was promoting a book of a collection of Polaroid pictures taken throughout their tours, something that I have never seen used before by bands. I felt like it was a great way for fans of The Kills to see captured, behind the scenes moments of their tours that they would not normally see. I LOVED that this was something different from the typical flyers, posters, and stickers used to promote bands or artist. Another type of marketing The Kills wanted with our promotions was the collecting of email addresses so that fans can have a way to stay connected to what is going on with The Kills. I was kind of hesitant when seeing this, because I knew that this strategy was going to be hard to accomplish. With social media today, fans are able to gain instant news about the bands in much faster methods such as Facebook and Twitter.
Upon arriving at the venue, I was puzzled to see that the same books I received to promote were on display at the merch table. My first thought was, why was I there to distribute the books if they were on display for everyone to grab? But I didn’t let this stop me from trying to rock the campaign. When you are a Synner, or a street teamer in general, you never know what the circumstances are going to be upon walking into a venue or how successful/unsuccessful a campaign is going to be. You have to learn how to just roll with what you are given.
I have to say that this was one of the hardest campaigns to try to successfully complete. Trying to gather emails like the client specifically wanted was very tough. Many of the fans stated that they were already signed up for the email updates, while others said they were not interested in signing up. While having materials to hand out, it came down to either having the attendees reject the email list or handing out the photo books, so I went with trying to distribute as many photobooks as possible. This was also a challenge like I stated due to the many of the attendees already grabbing or flipping through one while they visited the merch table.
Overall, the campaign was successful in some ways and unsuccessful in others. This is something that is very common when handling certain campaigns. It’s always better to use your judgment so that you make sure the campaign goes as successful as you can possibly make it.
If you haven’t already, definitely check out The Kills. They were AMAZING with such a great performance, that definitely gained them a new fan…ME!
